i was a little put off by it being a british book. they usually made an effort to be understood by american readers by including ozs and cups and some words in parentheses (ex: every time storecupboard came up they’d include pantry which actually started getting annoying since i was reading this in one sitting and the word is kind of self-explanatory), but they didn’t include other words that i didn’t know like field mushrooms (they’ve got to be big to stuff so maybe portobellos? or maybe they’re what button mushrooms grow up to be if you wait long enough?) or soft stemmed broccoli (broccoli rabe? broccolini?). other things i just don’t think are really available here like golden syrup or flaked rice. there was also just a bit of difference in the taste sensibilities, not much rice pudding or mincemeat happening in my life. i don’t know if the recipes would really only take 15 minutes either. she sometimes was cooking rice in just 10 minutes and i don’t think that’s how rice works unless it’s some kind of instant rice which she didn’t mention. despite not all of the recipes being something i’d like to try i really can’t fault the quality of the work and i’m sure other people would be happy for them. page that introduces them to potential site visitors.
